Buddhist Global Relief was founded by Bhikku Bodhi, who is well known as the translator for the major body of Buddha’s sutras into English. He was inspired to found this charity uniting all Buddhists in giving. Run by volunteers, 94% of the funds go directly to projects that feed women and children and support  farmers, creating sustainable farming practices worldwide. BGR partners with many organizations on the ground such as OXFAM and the Hellen Keller Foundation, by no means only buddhist projects.

Projects include food programs in  HaitiCameroon, India, Bangladesh, Sudan, Cambodia, VietnamCote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia and even the US. Buddhist Global Relief maintains an emergency fund, distributing over $100,000 so far this year to places like Syria and Yemen. Funds will now also go to Feeding Texas for food banks and shelter meals.

Preble Street runs three soup kitchens and a food pantry serving over 1100 meals daily to people of all ages struggling to maintain independence on a fixed income, for whom food is scarce. All the soup kitchens are co-located with Preble Street programs, and caseworkers and outreach workers from collaborating organizations throughout the community can meet and engage with people in need of services. The food programs are only a part of their work to serve the homeless and vulnerable. They are also advocates and provide safe, affordable permanent housing and support to chronically homeless men and women in Portland, Maine.
